Guests were treated to a super special event  at the Bahr Gallery Saturday night March 1 in Oyster Bay.

Dark Star Orchestra’s lead guitarist Jeff Mattson and bass player Skip Vangelas presented an intimate acoustic evening at the Bahr which began with a reproduction of the legendary show known as “Lonesome Prison Blues” featuring Jerry Garcia and John Kahn playing acoustic to the inmates at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem, Oregon on June 5, 1982. This was followed by acoustic choices of their own including a jugband version of Viola Lee Blues, The Lindy Hop and Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues."

In June 1982, Jerry Garcia and John Kahn took a short trip to play 4 acoustic shows in the Northwest, and Garcia, having received a letter from Steve Stilling in prison, agreed to stop by and play this show which was held outside in intermittent rain. If you have ever listened to the tape of the Oregon prison show you know the special energy that show brought - playing behind the prison walls and singing about outlaws, jail, gambling, guns, betrayal and other facets of the Robert Hunter inspired canon in front of people who have lived that real and dangerous life - and are doing the time for it. The local newspaper cheekily titled their review of the show, "Jerry Garcia Plays to Captive Audience."    Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLXONuMTUvk
