We have a super special event coming up at the Bahr Gallery Saturday night March 1 in Oyster Bay. This show will sell out very fast - if you would like to come, please RSVP as soon as you can.
Join Dark Star Orchestra’s Jeff Mattson and Skip Vangelas for an intimate acoustic and electric evening at the Bahr Gallery where they will be reproducing the legendary show known as “Lonesome Prison Blues” featuring Jerry Garcia and John Kahn playing acoustic to the inmates at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem, Oregon on June 5, 1982. This will be followed by an electric set.
Saturday March 1 — 8:00-10:00pm — Doors Open at 7:30 — $30/person cash.
Your cover includes the usual Bahr Gallery refreshments. There is no seating for this show.
In June 1982, Jerry Garcia and John Kahn took a short trip to play 4 acoustic shows in the Northwest, and Garcia, having received a letter from Steve Stilling in prison, agreed to stop by and play this show which was held outside in intermittent rain. If you have ever listened to the tape of the Oregon prison show you know the special energy that show brought - playing behind the prison walls and singing about outlaws, jail, gambling, guns, betrayal and other facets of the Robert Hunter inspired canon in front of people who have lived that real and dangerous life - and are doing the time for it. The local newspaper cheekily titled their review of the show, "Jerry Garcia Plays to Captive Audience." Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLXONuMTUvk
Personally, I have been dreaming of trying to put on this show for 5-6 years and never imagined it would come true. Serious thanks go out to Bob Minken and Grateful Guitars founder Andy Logan. And it’s all surrounded by last Fall’s Exhibition of vintage Grateful Dead posters!
Hard RSVP to Ted@bahrgallery.com - you must be on the List to get in.
Jeff Mattson has been in the role of lead guitar at Dark Star Orchestra for the last fourteen years. Known for his intricate, soulful leads, he has a storied history with the jam scene, previously playing with The Volunteers, The Zen Tricksters and the Donna Jean Godchaux Band. Skip Vangelas, who has played bass in DSO for 12 years, is a long-time fixture in the East Coast Grateful Dead community starting with the band Border Legion He lends warm, driving bass lines offering the perfect counterbalance to Jeff’s fluidity. Together, they dive deep into the essence of the songs, bringing listeners on an immersive journey that’s both reflective and dynamic.
Refreshments and snacks will be served but we assume you will have eaten dinner beforehand - Oyster Bay has a bunch of great restaurants (and bars) to choose from - check them out here: www.bahrgallery.com/about/visiting-oyster-bay
