Released in 1978, Cats under the Stars was the only studio released album actually credited to the Jerry Garcia Band. The same year that the Cats album was released, the Grateful Dead played in Egypt. The Egyptian imagery was so powerful that it influenced much of the art that was to come, including this stunning piece by Stanley Mouse. The Cats Under the Stars album was a turning point for Mouse and for Garcia. Garcia broke away from the Grateful Dead in terms of playing in another band, and Stanley broke away from Alton Kelly, creating the album art as a solo artist. The image was first used for the cover of the album and later turned into art prints by Mouse.

The album was the first to be recorded at the Grateful Dead's Club Front in San Rafael, a warehouse space that had been acquired for band rehearsals and then converted to a studio. The record was not a financial success, but it remained Garcia's favorite. Other band members were Donna and Keith Godchaux, John Kahn, Ron Tutt, and Maria Muldaur and Merl Saunders on a few tracks. The album contained Garcia/Robert Hunter masterpieces like “Rubin and Cherise,” “Cats Under The Stars,” and “Gomorrah.”

This poster was a promotional piece done at the time of the album’s release to promote awareness and sales of the album. As it was not intended to be saved as an art piece, it was printed on thin paper. As such, before framing it, we had the piece backed with archival linen to stabilize and protect it
